Gutters for Metal Roofs in Jackson

Jackson Metal Roofing Pros can set up a visit from a roofer who fits gutters to metal roofs, sized for the runoff and made of a metal that won't fight the panels. Gutters for metal roofs usually mean seamless aluminum K-style runs, half-round gutters on older houses, or copper under a copper roof. Gutter width, hanger spacing, downspout placement and the flashing where a roof edge meets a wall decide whether all that water ends up where it should.

Gutters for Metal Roofs: K-Style, Half-Round and Copper

Smooth metal panels have no granules to hold water back, so runoff reaches the eave quickly. The gutter's profile, size and metal all follow from that.

Seamless Aluminum K-Style Runs

Seamless aluminum K-style gutter comes in one piece per run, with no joints along the front. HomeGuide puts aluminum gutters at $10 to $20 per linear foot installed, and says seamless costs $3 to $5 or more per foot above sectional gutter but gives better leak protection. Aluminum also suits a steel roof: the Metal Construction Association says aluminum trim, clips and fasteners are compatible with Galvalume steel.

Half-Round Gutters on Older Houses

Half-round gutters suit bungalows, cottages and older brick homes where a boxy K-style line looks wrong. HomeGuide says they add $1 to $2 per linear foot over K-style because of their specialized installation requirements. Ask to see the bracket that will hold them, and how far apart the brackets go.

Copper Gutters and Downspouts

Copper gutters run $25 to $40 per linear foot installed in HomeGuide's figures, with a lifespan of 50 to 100 years. They belong under a copper roof or a copper accent. Under a steel roof they need care: the MCA warns that copper corrodes steel and aluminum it touches, so copper hangers and fasteners must not bear on the steel panels or trim. The copper side of that question is covered on copper roofing.

Sizing for Fast Runoff and Overhang

Size comes down to how much roof drains to each gutter and how hard it rains. HomeGuide says most homes use 5-inch K-style gutters, and lists 6-inch for heavy-rainfall areas and large roofs at $1 to $2 more per linear foot. On a metal roof, also ask how far the panel edge sits over the gutter. Water coming off a long, steep, smooth panel in a downpour can overshoot a gutter set too far back.

Skylight and Solar Flashing on Metal Panels

Openings in a metal roof decide how much water reaches each gutter, and where. Section R903.2.1 requires flashing around roof openings. Section R903.2.2 requires a cricket on the uphill side of any chimney or penetration more than 30 inches wide, with an exception for unit skylights flashed to the maker's instructions. For solar on standing seam, ask whether the racking clamps to the seams or drills through the panels.

Gutters for Metal Roofs on Jackson's Yazoo Clay

Jackson is in the Yazoo Clay belt, and that's the strongest local reason to get the gutters right. A Mississippi Bureau of Geology circular on the clay says foundation and structural damage in the Yazoo Clay belt, "especially in the Jackson area", comes mainly from the clay swelling when wet and shrinking when dry. It names "rain gutter drainage" among the causes of isolated foundation movement. It also says the ground should slope away so water from the eaves and gutter spouts doesn't collect near the foundation.

The code says the same thing in its own terms. Section R801.3 of the IRC says that where expansive soils are known, a house must have "a controlled method of water disposal from roofs" that discharges roof water at least 5 feet from the foundation walls or to an approved drainage system. On a metal roof that sends water off fast, that means:

  • Downspouts with extensions

At least 5 feet out, or tied into a drain line.
  • No dumping at corners

Ask where each downspout will discharge before it's hung.
  • Grade checked

Soil sloping away from the house at each outlet.

Gutters for Metal Roofs in a Jackson Cloudburst

Jackson's airport averages 57.35 inches of rain a year in NOAA's 1991-2020 normals. Downpours matter more for sizing than totals do. NOAA's Atlas 14 rainfall estimates for central Jackson put the five-minute peak of a storm with a 10% chance in any year at 8.98 inches per hour, and the same burst in a 50% chance storm at 6.61 inches per hour. Those are the rates a gutter and its downspouts have to carry for a few minutes at a time.

Two more things keep gutters working through storm season:

  • Kick-out flashing

Where a roof eave runs into a wall, R903.2.1 calls for a flashing that diverts water away. Without it, water can run down the wall behind the gutter end.
  • Debris

Pine needles and oak leaves slide off metal into the gutter. HomeGuide lists gutter guards at $15 to $45 per linear foot installed.

Gutters for Metal Roofs: Lines for the Quote

HomeGuide's national range for gutters is $12 to $25 per linear foot installed. Ask for each line below in writing:

  • Profile, size and metal

    K-style or half-round, 5-inch or 6-inch, aluminum or copper.
  • Downspout count and discharge

Where each one ends, and how far from the foundation.
  • Hangers and fasteners

The type, the spacing, and a metal that matches the roof and gutter.
  • Fascia repair

HomeGuide puts fascia replacement at $5 to $12 per linear foot, and rotten fascia has to be fixed before new gutters go up.
  • Second story

HomeGuide adds $1 to $3 or more per linear foot for two-story work.
