Metal Carport Roof Styles and Small Outbuildings

Rounded Regular-Style Carport Roofs
The regular style is the budget carport: a curved roof with rolled eaves and panels running across the building, front to back, instead of down the slope. Because the ribs run sideways, rain sits in the laps and pine straw piles up in the curved edges, so that's where to look for rust first. They're fine over a single car on a dry lot. If yours is already rusting along the laps, the re-roof section below applies.
Boxed-Eave A-Frame Carport Roofs
A boxed-eave carport has a peaked A-frame roof and trimmed, square eaves, so it looks more like a building. The panels still run horizontally, so it sheds water better than the rounded style but not as well as a vertical roof. It's the middle choice on price.

Vertical-Panel Carport Roofs
On a vertical roof the panels run from the ridge down to the eave, on hat-channel framing laid across the trusses, with a ridge cap on top. Water and debris slide straight off along the ribs. One carport builder's guide calls vertical panels mandatory for buildings longer than 35 feet, because horizontal panels top out at that length and longer runs need spliced seams. Under Jackson's oaks and pines, this is the style to pick if you only want to buy one.
Backyard Storage Shed Roofs
Wood sheds with a plywood roof deck can take the same metal as a house: 5-V, R-panel or a short run of standing seam, over underlayment, with drip edge and gable trim. A shed roof is small enough that a better panel adds little to the total, and it's often the cheapest place to match the house color.
Detached Garage and Workshop Roofs
A detached garage or workshop often gets the same roof as the house so the two read as a set. If the shop is heated or cooled, or holds tools that rust, treat it like a house roof: solid deck, underlayment and insulation. An unconditioned shop with steel straight over open purlins will drip on humid mornings unless the panels carry a drip membrane, which the barn roofing page explains.

Re-Roofing a Rusted Carport
Often the roof sheets give out before the frame does. A re-roof strips the old sheets, checks the hat channel and trusses for rust where they meet, and puts new panels, screws and trim on the same frame. Check the legs and base rails too. A frame rusted through at the ground isn't worth a new roof, and converting a horizontal roof to vertical panels needs new hat channel, so ask for that to be priced on its own.

Metal Carport Roof Wind and Storm Exposure
An open carport catches wind from underneath as well as over the top, and a light roof on an open frame has little weight holding it down. The frame's anchors matter as much as the panel screws. Ask how the legs are tied down, whether with concrete anchors into a slab, ground anchors, or posts set in concrete, and how many per leg. Hinds County's storm record is on the hail damage page.
If the carport is attached to the house, the joint where its roof meets the wall or the main roof is the leak point. The flashing details for that tie-in are on the porch roof page.
Metal Carport Roof Quotes: Lines Worth Seeing
The residential code that governs a house also covers its accessory structures, such as a carport, shed or detached garage on the same lot, and the city's permit process is on the installation page. Ask each installer to write down:
